Outdoor Firepit Construction
Constructing an Outdoor Living Area?
Do you have a space in your yard you would like to make better use of? Perhaps you spend enough time indoors during the week and would like to have a place outdoors to entertain, socialize and relax. That’s completely understandable.
Outdoor chimney and fireplaces are more common for that very reason. There is something special about a burning fire when with a group of friends. It just feels right, and relaxing. On cooler nights though people pick up and go indoors sometimes before they want to. Those portable fire pits can be handy for cooking marshmallows on for the kids, or keeping the mosquitos away at dusk but they are not built for producing heat.
With the right fireplace a warm radiant heat is produced that you can feel. This can keep you outdoors longer into the season, perhaps even into the winter!
What are the obstacles for an outdoor fireplace?
As we begin to plan the fireplace for the outdoor living area we must identify some potential issues. It needs to be away from the main house or else the top of the chimney would need to be built according to the height requirements for chimneys, which is well above the roofline. Not something we want to do with a detached fireplace and chimney. Another obstacle when building a real wood burning fireplace is trees, bushes, shrubs and other vegetation or overgrowth. They need to be cut back and no trees should overhang a wood burning unit of any kind.
When adding something as permanent as a chimney care must also be taken not to encroach on property lines. A footing will need to be dug and proper procedures such as calling dig safe should be utilized as well.
Are outdoor fireplaces built differently than indoor units?
Constructing an outdoor chimney and fireplace isn’t much different than building a chimney with an indoor fireplace. A damper isn’t required as there is no heated room air to seal off from going up the flue when not in use.
Care must be taken when selecting the mortar that that is used on completely exterior wood burning fireplaces. As always a qualified masonry contractor should be used to build this type of chimney, not a landscaper or others that are claiming experience with this construction. The wrong mortar that is exposed to heat, creosote, and moisture will degrade at an accelerated rate.

Outdoor Fireplace Construction: Enhancing Design Elements
When constructing an outdoor fireplace, various design elements can be added to enhance the overall aesthetics and functionality of the structure. Here’s an elaboration on the different design elements that can be integrated into any outdoor fireplace finish:
Arches
Elegant Curves: Adding arches to your outdoor fireplace creates a classic and timeless look. Arches can be used in the firebox opening, on the facade, or as decorative elements above the hearth. The curved design adds a sense of sophistication and architectural interest, making your fireplace a focal point in your outdoor living space.
Structural Integrity: Besides their aesthetic appeal, arches distribute weight evenly, adding structural integrity to the fireplace. This can be particularly beneficial for larger outdoor fireplace designs.
Keystones
Architectural Accent: A keystone is the central stone at the apex of an arch. Adding a keystone to your outdoor fireplace enhances its architectural character. It acts as a focal point that draws the eye, emphasizing the elegant curves of the arch.
Symbol of Strength: Traditionally, the keystone is a symbol of strength and stability in masonry. Incorporating this element not only adds visual appeal but also conveys a sense of durability and craftsmanship.
Quoins
Corner Enhancement: Quoins are the masonry blocks used at the corners of walls. Adding quoins to your outdoor fireplace can accentuate the corners and create a more robust and defined appearance. This element provides a visually striking contrast, especially when different materials or colors are used.
Textural Contrast: Quoins often feature a different texture or color from the rest of the fireplace, adding depth and interest to the design.
Corbeled Elements
Decorative Supports: Corbeled elements are projecting stones or bricks used as decorative supports. They can be added under the mantle, hearth, or along the sides of the fireplace to create intricate patterns and provide additional visual interest.
Historical Appeal: Corbeling is a traditional masonry technique that adds a sense of historical and architectural significance to your outdoor fireplace.
Radius Hearths
Curved Hearth Design: A radius hearth features a curved front edge, offering a softer and more inviting look compared to a traditional straight-edged hearth. This design element can make your outdoor fireplace more approachable and comfortable for seating and gathering.
Enhanced Flow: The curved shape of a radius hearth complements the natural flow of outdoor spaces, making it a perfect addition for patios and gardens.
Stone Hearths
Natural Beauty: A stone hearth adds a touch of natural beauty and rugged elegance to your outdoor fireplace. Different types of stone, such as granite, slate, or limestone, can be used to match your aesthetic preferences and the surrounding landscape.
Durability and Functionality: Stone is a durable material that can withstand the elements, making it an excellent choice for outdoor hearths. It also provides a sturdy and heat-resistant surface for the fireplace.
Stone Mantles
Stately Feature: A stone mantle creates a stately and prominent feature above the firebox. This element can be crafted from a variety of stones, providing options to match the overall design theme of your outdoor space.
Versatile Design: Stone mantles can be simple and sleek or elaborately carved, allowing for customization based on your style preferences.
Stone Caps
Protective Finish: Stone caps are placed on top of the chimney or outdoor fireplace structure to protect it from weather elements. They provide a finished look and prevent water from seeping into the masonry.
Aesthetic Enhancement: Besides their functional role, stone caps can be designed to complement the overall aesthetic of the fireplace, adding a polished and cohesive finish to the structure.
